Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Desmond Bagley · 1966 · survival

Desmond Bagley's 1966 thriller. A meteorologist is convinced that a hurricane everyone else expects to pass harmlessly will turn and destroy the Caribbean island of San Fernandez. The dictator will not evacuate the capital, a civil war is starting in the hills, and the only people who believe Wyatt are in no position to order anything.

  1. 1
    San Juan

At the American weather station, Wyatt argues that the storm forming to the south-east will not behave as the models say - a case resting on a feeling about one stretch of ocean that he cannot justify on paper.

  2. 2
    Hurricane Mabel

He flies into the storm with a hurricane-hunting crew to take readings from inside the eye, and comes out certain: Mabel is going to turn west and put a wall of water straight into the island's harbour.

  3. 3
    St Pierre

In the capital nobody with power will act - the dictator has a war in the hills and no intention of emptying his city - and Wyatt has perhaps thirty hours to get anyone at all onto high ground.
