Rudyard Kipling · 1894 · survival
Rudyard Kipling's 1894 collection. A child lost in the Seeonee hills is raised by wolves and taught the Law of the Jungle by a bear and a panther, with a tiger waiting for him to grow up. Mowgli's stories run between the wolf-pack's rock, the river, the ruined city where the monkeys live, and a human village he can belong to no better.
- 1The Seeonee hills
In the Seeonee hills a man's cub crawls into a wolves' cave one night with Shere Khan behind him, and is accepted into the pack on the word of a bear and a panther - and grows up learning the Law from Baloo and Bagheera.
- 2The Waingunga
At the Peace Rock on the Waingunga, where the truce holds in drought and no beast may kill at the water, the jungle's business is conducted - and the tiger's claim on the boy is argued in front of everything that drinks there.
- 3Cold Lairs
The monkey-people carry Mowgli off to the ruined city they have taken over, a place of broken terraces and empty tanks that the jungle has been swallowing for centuries - and Kaa comes to get him out of it.
- 4The man-village
Driven out by the pack, Mowgli goes down to the village to learn to be a man, and is driven out of that too as a sorcerer - and settles the account with Shere Khan by running the buffalo herd up a ravine.
