Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Alistair MacLean · 1957 · sea

Alistair MacLean's 1957 WWII thriller. Twelve hundred British soldiers are trapped on the Aegean island of Kheros, and only the silencing of two giant German guns on nearby Navarone can save them. A hand-picked commando team sails from Alexandria to the island of Castelrosso and on by caique to Navarone, to scale its impossible cliffs and blow the guns to pieces.

  1. 1
    Alexandria

From the Allied base at Alexandria, Captain Mallory and his hand-picked team of saboteurs set out on a mission thought impossible: to silence the great guns of Navarone, which have sealed the Aegean against the Royal Navy.

  2. 2
    Castelrosso

They reach the British-held island of Castelrosso, gateway to the enemy Aegean, and there transfer to a battered Greek caique - disguised as harmless fishermen for the dangerous passage into German-patrolled waters.

  3. 3
    Navarone

Wrecked by a storm on the coast of Navarone, the team scales the sheer south cliff thought unclimbable, then fights its way into the fortress to blow the guns and open the sea lanes before the Germans overrun Kheros.
