Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Denis Villeneuve · 2015 · thriller

Denis Villeneuve's 2015 thriller. An FBI agent who raids a house of corpses in Arizona is recruited onto a task force that will not explain its objective, its legal basis or who the quiet Colombian attached to it actually works for. The operation runs across the border into Juarez and back, and she gradually works out that she is there as a signature.

  1. 1
    Chandler

A hostage-rescue raid on a suburban house outside Phoenix turns up dozens of bodies sealed inside the walls, and FBI agent Kate Macer is invited onto an inter-agency task force with a remit nobody will state out loud.

  2. 2
    El Paso

The task force stages out of El Paso, where the briefings answer none of Kate's questions - and the convoy forms up for a run across the bridge that she is told is a prisoner transfer and plainly is not.

  3. 3
    Ciudad Juarez

In Juarez the bodies hang from the overpasses and the convoy collects its man, then sits in stalled traffic at the border with gunmen in the cars alongside - and the rules of engagement are whatever they decide.

  4. 4
    Nogales

The real objective is a smuggling tunnel under the line at Nogales, and the operation's purpose is finally clear: not to stop the trade but to put one cartel back in charge of it, and Kate is there to make it legal.
