Jack Gold · 1987 · survival
Jack Gold's 1987 film of the only successful mass escape from a Nazi extermination camp. In October 1943 the prisoners of Sobibor, knowing the camp is to be closed and everyone in it killed, organise a revolt around a captured Soviet officer - killing the SS officers one by one at appointed times, then going over the wire through a minefield.
- 1Minsk
A transport of Soviet Jewish prisoners of war arrives from Minsk, and among them is Alexander Pechersky, a Red Army lieutenant - the first man in the camp with military training and no intention of dying quietly.
- 2Sobibor
In the workshops of a camp where a quarter of a million people have already been killed, the prisoners plan a revolt requiring every SS officer to die within an hour, each summoned separately for a fitting or a repair.
- 3The Parczew forest
Three hundred get over the wire and across the minefield, and most are hunted down in the weeks after. The survivors scatter into the forests and the partisan bands - and the Germans close the camp and plough it under.
