Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Werner Herzog · 1972 · river

Werner Herzog's 1972 fever-dream. In 1560 a Spanish expedition descends from the Peruvian Andes into the Amazon in search of El Dorado. When the party bogs down, the ruthless Lope de Aguirre mutinies and drives a raft of doomed conquistadores ever deeper down the river - into starvation, arrows out of the trees, and the indifferent green immensity of the jungle.

  1. 1
    The Andes

Gonzalo Pizarro's expedition winds down out of the Peruvian mountains in a vast column of soldiers, slaves and sedan chairs, bound for the legendary golden city of El Dorado somewhere in the eastern jungle.

  2. 2
    The Maranon

Bogged in the rainforest, Pizarro sends a raft party ahead down the river. Aguirre murders its leaders, installs a puppet emperor, and declares the expedition free of Spain - the Wrath of God, bound only for El Dorado.

  3. 3
    The Amazon

Deeper and deeper down the widening river the survivors drift, picked off by fever, hunger and unseen arrows, until Aguirre raves alone on a raft overrun with monkeys, still king of a jungle that never noticed him.
